Its border location, 4km south of the Scottish border, has been the focus of many wars between England and Scotland dating back to the 11th century, and whilst the town retains many cultural links with Scotland, it has remained in English hands since 1482. It is interesting to note that between 1147 and 1482 it changed hands more than 13 times.

It was during the reign of Elizabeth I that the town's ramparts, or fortifications, were built. At a cost of £128,648 this became her most expensive commission. The town of Berwick has many interesting and historical features, notably the Barracks built in the 18th century and now maintained by English Heritage.

It has 4 striking bridges, The Old Bridge built between 1610 and 1624, the Royal Border Bridge built under the direction of Robert Stephenson in 1847, the 1925 Royal Tweed Bridge and just upstream, the Union Bridge which is the world's oldest suspension bridge still in use today.
